Britney Spears’ hair makeovers: new looks for ‘X Factor,’ ‘Till the World Ends’ & more!

“Britney’s back!”
that’s what entertainment writers are saying about Ms. Spears. They are referring to the revival of her career, evidenced in her new role as an X Factor judge and her video/ad ‘Till The World Ends (Twister Remix). Others are raving about B’s new bikini bod. While that’s all well and good, we say “Britney’s back” because of her hair and style. In the past she has made bad choices like going bald and letting her extensions fall out. So far her new ‘dos have been pretty good.

As usual, Brit doesn’t stick with one style—she prefers to mix it up. Her Facebook profile photo (at top of post) is sleek, platinum blond and falls just below the shoulders. At X Factor auditions (above), she’s flaunting loose curls and a slightly off-center part (but that day her hair didn’t get as much attention as her cleavage).

Just days ago, the pop princess debuted multicolored dip-dye ends that are everywhere these days with celebs and real women alike. The teal, blue and hot pink tips came out at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas last weekend. Inspired by My Little Pony (and X Factor co-judge Demi Lovato?), her mane stayed streaked on Monday. With all of Simon Cowell’s dislike for Ms. Spears’ wardrobe, we’re wondering if he’ll ban the dip-dye. (But how can he nix Brit’s color scheme without banning Demi’s?)

During promos for X-Factor, the bombshell blonde was simply lovely in the straight but full, unlayered locks that she often favors. Also in the pre-season promos, one of her Celebrity Hairstyles was spiral curled for a modern update on crimpy curls. To copy her loose curls, use a waving or curling iron. To keep that soft, sexy look, don’t brush out the curls; just finger them gently into place and spritz on a strong-hold hair spray.

As for the bleached blond color, don’t even think about doing it yourself! Go to a salon and have it done by a professional colorist. The experts at celebrityhaircolorguide.com explain the type of techniques your colorist should use. They recommend Organic Color Systems ammonia-free formula in two shades of white for foil highlights then a regrowth color cream at the roots and sporadically through the ends. For styling products, they recommend Cocktailing Hydrate Leave-In, Gloss Serum and Mousse.

In other news, Brit has been having lots of fun showing off her trim and toned figure. In a recent tweet, she included a photo of herself in a bikini with this message: “Y’all ready for summer to end? I’m definitely not!” A photo that she posted on Facebook recently showed the pop princess in a little top and cut-offs. Even though the pop princess has been working out regularly, US Weekly says the photo of her in a white bikini is four years old!

It doesn’t matter what the critics say about her body. Who needs a stick-thin figure when she has everything else going for her? It will be interesting to see if the former Disney star is able to recoup her title as top pop princess.

VMAs Hairstyles…starring Rihanna in super short hair plus Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato

We hope you had a chance to watch or record the MTV Video Music Awards last night…especially if you want (or need) a new hairstyle.

If you haven’t watched the VMAs yet, go to hollywoodlife.com. or click on the photo above. For us, Rihanna was the mane news last night. Unless you read about it right before the awards show, Rihanna cutting off her hair came as a big surprise. Our response: We love, love, love it!

While Ri got most of our attention, there were plenty of other hair headliners. Some are saying the newly shorn star was inspired by Miley Cyrus, Elisabeth Moss, Emma Watson (who has grown out her hair) and Anne Hathaway (who’s in the process of going longer).

Speaking of Miley, she took an unexpected twist by wearing her hair up in a of-the-moment pompadour. She’s able to lift her short cut because the crown is longer than the base.

Taylor didn’t look much different on the Red Carpet, but why should she? Her glam looks work well for any gala, and little changes make her hair seem brand new. The darker, curly hair she sported for COVERGIRL were replaced by white  blond, straight locks.

We were about to say Demi didn’t wear a new look, but then we realized she had gone from dip-dye purple to a bright blond ombre! Knowing Ms. Lovato she’ll be changing up her mane today or in the near future (with help from extensions, temp color, whatever).

That’s all we have time for now, but we’ll get back to the award-winning hairstyles ASAP!

‘The Bachelorette’: You told us you want to know more about Emily Maynard’s hair…so here it is!

Forget the rumors that Bachelorette Emily Maynard is already cheating on fiancé Jef. Ignore the related gossip about Emily sexting with Oakland Raiders Quarterback Matt Leinart.

The mane thing to remember is how much you like Emily’s hair. During the season news about her looks were a frequent topic of conversation. Some called her a diva, who was overly stressed about her hair. Others, such as her personal hairstylist Denise Antonacci, say Em is as sweet as she seemed on air.

Denise is a stylist/colorist at the Jon Ric Hair Spa in Charlotte, NC. In between Emily’s stint on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Denise suggested that Em change her hair to fit her age flatter her features. Emily agreed, so Ms. Antonacci used a balayage technique and foil highlighting to create a sandy blond color. Denise likes to leave the roots darker for a realistic, imperfect look popular with women today. The haircut changes were minimal—just a trim of the ends and the long layers.

According to Denise, Emily didn’t wear extensions during The Bachelorette because she was concerned they would be obvious when swimming or in her close-up kissing scenes. Ms. Antonacci says Em put in extensions after filming and before the flurry of promotions that followed. (We’re not sure we believe she didn’t wear extensions during the show. See the photo at right of mother and daughter, Ricki, which appeared on Huffington Post with this caption: “Sorry but that hair cannot all be real.”)

As for conditioning, Denise told Allure.com that Emily had some damage on her ends from blow-drying. “So we used the Kérastase Nutri-Thermique  Masque and some express in-salon treatments. She also uses the Kérastase Bain Satin 1 Shampoo, the Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique Leave-In Conditioner, and Leonor Greyl Serum de Soie Sublimateur to prevent frizz.”

Although Emily had lots of help from Denise and the show’s stylist, she’s experienced doing her own hair at home. In a Reader’s Poll we did, your fave look of Em’s is the large spiral curls (featured on top). In a Twitterview, InStyle asked Emily, “What do you use to curl your hair?” She answered, “I use a Sultra Beauty Bombshell Curling Wand. It’s impossible to mess up!”

More often than not, the former Bachelorette wears her hair smooth with a little curl on the ends. To get that look, Emily blow-dries her hair with a Supersolano blow-dryer and an Ibiza medium-size round brush. (Denise also uses the Solano dryer to make her client’s hair shiny and smooth).

When the reality star’s hair is completely dry, she curls it on jumbo-sized Velcro® curlers, working with small sections, rolling hair away from the face and vertically on the sides. She leaves the rollers in until she’s ready to go out and then spritzes on hairspray. Emily is a firm believer of Velcro® rollers. When she was on The Bachelor, her roomies liked them so much they wanted to know everything about them!

If you need extra help to hold the curl, apply a styling product before inserting the Velcros and use a blow-dryer on each roller for about 20 to 30 seconds. After that, leave the rollers in for 10 to 15 minutes more to “set” the curl.

For a sleeker style, Emily does the same thing but skips the Velcros. You don’t even have to curl all your hair; simply give the ends a little twist with the iron. Soften the curl immediately after releasing it from the iron.

And no story about The Bachelorette would be complete without the casual coifs she wore on the show. Her ponytail (above) was a big hit with the boys and fans of the show. For one beach scene the blonde had a carefree look polished off with a braid in front.

Here are a few more of Emily’s favorite things for her hair: WEN® Cleansing Conditioner; Neutrogena’s Anti-Residue Shampoo (once a week); TRESemme 24 Hour Body Hair Spray; Aveda hair spray, and Iso Beauty Hair Straightener Flat Iron.

There’s more we could say about Emily’s hair, but we’ll leave that for another time.

Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss cuts and colors her hair like Twiggy’s (not like Miley’s!)

Some say Elisabeth has pulled a “Miley.”
We say, “No way!” What do you think?

Elisabeth Moss, a.k.a. Mad Woman Peggy Olson, has taken a page out of the ’60s by cutting her hair into a super-short Pixie popularized by Twiggy. For those of you who are too young to know who Twiggy was, take it from us. We wanted to look like her—more for her hair than for the stick thin figure that insired her name. (Back then we didn’t have to worry about being stick thin!)

Many writers are saying that Elisabeth was inspired by Miley Cyrus, who they are now calling a trendsetter. We couldn’t disagree more with the Miley comparison. First of all, Ms. Moss’ new shortcut has more class and is much more flattering than Ms. Cyrus’. (And we’re sure the new blonde won’t be desperately seeking attention with non-stop tweets!)

Secondly, Elisabeth has more in common with Emma Watson who went super short, pretty and sophisticated two years ago. Thirdly, the Pixie’s perfect for the retro Mad Men (even though Elisabeth is acting coy and saying she will be wearing wigs to make Peggy look the same next season).

And last, but certainly not least, E. wanted to try something new. “I wanted to do something really different,” she told US Weekly last Tuesday when interviewed at the premiere of For a Good Time, Call…

No matter what the reason, we think Elisabeth’s do-over is a winner!

Demi Lovato’s hair soars like a ‘Skyscraper’ and changes with the wind!

Demi loves to change her hair and it shows!
How do we know DLo likes to vary her hair? Because that’s what she told allure.com in an August interview. “I love changing my hair a lot,” she said. “I think it’s fun.” Here’s just a few examples of her affection for makeovers.

One jacket. Two hairstyles
When you see stars wearing their favorite things at different times, their hair doesn’t change much. That’s not the case with Ms. D. Two hairstyles worn with the same jean jacket make Demi look like new women. One day, she let her hair down so pink dip dye stands out. Another time, Demi is hardly recognizable in upswept curls held up with a scarf headband. Of course, sunglasses make a difference, too. BTW: notice how the ends are light blue instead of pink!

One night. Three ‘dos!
As any good TV host, Demi changed her hair three times the night of the Teen Choice Awards. The two shown above aren’t that different; the second is more sedate because it’s not as high and exaggerated as her look on the pink carpet. Halfway through the show, Demi threw us a curve ball. Her mane had changed so dramatically it seemed like it had been colored back stage! We’ve heard that she simply hid the blue ends when wearing the high pony. We don’t know how she covered the aqua ends, but we’re guessing it had something to do with extensions.

What we really liked that night was Demi’s dip-dye color that lots of stars and real women her age are flaunting. This wasn’t her first foray into the trendy color scheme. On June 16th, she showed up at X Factor auditions in blond and brown dipped in hot pink. That day she tweeted fans, “Loving my pink hair…”

If you think the former Disney star will settle into one hairstyle now that she’s turned 20, think again. We’re guessing it will be years before the former Disney star calms down. When she was younger, Demi wanted to experiment with purple, pink, blue or whatever hair color, she told Allure. “But I was busy trying to make it in the industry as an actress. It was hard to go in for auditions with blue hair.”

Our final prediction: now that her career is moving forward, there will be no turning back any time soon!

Ellen DeGeneres ‘shows’ support for Miley Cyrus’ new haircut: Who wears it best?

Leave it to Ellen to lighten the negativity coming from Miley’s fans in the wake of her drastic do-over!

While many fans are dissing Miley for cutting off her hair, Ellen DeGeneres says, “I love @MileyCyrus’ new haircut so much that I copied it.” This opinion came through a Tweet (appropriate for Miley a nonstop Tweeter since Sunday and frequent visitor to Twitter weeks earlier when she was hinting that she and hairstylist Chris McMillan were planning the mane change!)

We know Ellen wouldn’t want us to compare the two, but how can we not?! Even though El’s is obviously fake (with wig and/or Photoshop), we like her version better. In fact, we’re hoping Ms. DeG copies it someday.

We’re not sure why we like the copycat coif better…maybe it’s softer because the side isn’t shaved and the color is the same all over. One criticism, though: Elle’s look is wig-ish.

In Miley’s defense, the cut is cute with its choppy, lifted layers and longer bangs. The slight variations in blond add dimension and a “real” feel.

In short, the imitation was an obvious punk for the funny girl whose hair is sort of like Miley’s to begin with–short and very light blond. But the truth is Ellen has proven that imitation is truly a form of flattery.

In the poll below we have offered an answer that reflects the flood of news that has come forth comparing Miley’s new haircut to those of former Spice Girl Victoria and Gold Medal Olympian Megan. We’ve thrown in Pink because she has worn similar looks in the past, and they look great on her!

Please let us know your opinion and thank you in advance.

Who wore the best Teen Choice Hairstyle? Victoria Justice, Nikki Reed, Gwen Stefani, JoJo, Candice Accola or …

Previously at realhairstyles.net: we introduced the Teen Choice Hairstyles Poll. This concludes our series (for now. After we tally the votes, we will feature the winners). Choose your faves here and go back to the first post to place your ballot!

Victoria Justice goes au naturel in her long, straight, shiny style!
Nikki Reed‘s high-fashion hair looks like an upsweep from the front, but it’s a ponytail in back!

Vanessa Marano and Candice Accola both wear curvy hair fashions, but the similarity ends there. Van’s waves get thicker and thus more luscious as they flow from the crown down. Candice keeps her hair smooth all over, so that even the spiral curls are sleek.

Gwen Stefani and Peyton List both wore white-hot haircolor in totally different ways. While Gwen went straight and sleek, Peyton played up “retro.” We can’t make up our mind whether we like the updo or not, but it’s definitely unique!

We’re going to give you a hint about who we thought was one of the worst-tressed of the night (and it’s not the blonde). Meaghan Martin‘s mane is perfectly pretty with healthy-looking, layered, loose curls. On the other hand, JoJo‘s locks are way overdue for a cut and need help from a hair stylist.

Sasha Pieterse follows her peers who can’t resist wearing hair swept to one side. Hers is distinguised with a smooth top and loose curls below. Rebecca Black might not have the best ‘do of the night, but we like it! She’s managed to blend the wild color trend into an otherwise calm coif.

Who wore the best Teen Choice hairstyle? Crystal Reed, Lucy Hale, Bella Thorne, Nina Dobrev, Jordin Sparks or …

In the previous post, we started a Reader’s Poll of hairstyles from the Teen Choice Awards. Here’s more ‘dos for you to consider. Take a good look at these and the following, and then return to the first post to make your choice(s)!

Crystal Reed rolls one side up and sweeps the rest back.
Lucy Hale‘s side braid is knotted at the shoulder for a one-of-a-kind look.

Bella Thorne contrasts a smooth crown with spiral curls.
Laura Marano chose one of today’s trendiest hairstyles–the sidesweep.

Ashley Rickards and Debby Ryan had the same idea when it came to their hair for the Teen Choice Awards. They both have bangs and straight locks. Ashley’s color is darker and her bangs are angled. Debby has light bangs and a slightly off-center part.

Nina Dobrev looks like she didn’t do much to her hair besides adding a barely visible braid on top of her straight mane. Jordin Sparks makes a smart choice wearing her hair back to show off her pretty face and fashion.

Now that Portia di Rossi has cut her hair short, she and Ellen DeGeneres are starting to look alike! But they’re still unique with Ellen going shorter and layered while Portia goes a bit long without layers.

Who wore the best hairstyles at the Teen Choice Awards? Who wore the worst?

Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Hayden Panettiere and Lea Michele are some of the stars who made the best-dressed lists, and we’re guessing at least one of them will get your vote for favorite hairstyle!

While everyone else talks about the best- and worst-dressed at awards show, we look for the best-tressed. The Teen Choice Awards 2012 is no exception! Before we go into detail about their ‘dos, we’d like to know whose hair you want to know more about. Go through the next few posts and then come back here to place your votes. If you don’t see your Teen Choice hairstyles, just list them under “Other” in the poll below!

Here’s a few stars to get you started. For the next post, click here!

Carly Rae Jepson spices up long hair with bangs and an angled fringe.
Ashley Benson makes the classic upsweep chic with high volume and loose tendrils.

Demi Lovato looks like she borrowed Madonna’s I Dream of Jeannie ‘do. Chelsea Kane is one of the few stars who wore short hair at the Teen Choice Awards. Why don’t more celebs follow her lead?

Celebrity Hairstyles that have personality: Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez

There’s more to celebrity style
than meets the eye!

Demi doesn’t succumb to the pressure to be perfect as defined by Hollywood’s standards. The X-factor judge takes trends and makes them her own. Here, she puts a new twist on purple hair color and wears a super-high ponytail wrapped up in strands that match the bright hue.

Unlike many stars her age, Selena hasn’t turned into a wild woman as she transitions from teen to young miss. She strikes the perfect balance by wearing s sophisticated hairstyle and a gown that shows just the right amount of skin! While her image isn’t R-rated, she plans to do more “adult” songs in the near future.

When you hear the name Taylor Swift, you think of long blond spiral curls. Although that look’s a fan favorite, Tay has changed it up quite a bit through the years. Most of the pix above feature the dark haircolor she’s wearing in her new CoverGirl campaign. So far, we can’t tell what her admirers think about the brown, but we like it and commend her for making such a big change.
