‘Sparkle’ style: Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter, Carmen Ejogo and the late Whitney Houston

Everything about ‘Sparkle’ sparkles

from the three sisters

to Jordin Sparks as ‘Sparkle’

to their mother played by Whitney Houston
in her last movie before her untimely death

You wouldn’t guess from the top photo that doing the hairstyles for Sparkle was relatively easy…but they were because of wigs!

The movie’s hairstylist Kim Kimble explained her reliance on fabulous fakes to 8makeup.com. “Wigs were the quickest way to change the hair,” says Kim. The hair wardrobe included about 200 wigs with tools such as 20 boxes of hair pins and 36 cans of hair spray.

8makeup also spoke to the movie’s makeup artist Marietta Carter-Narcisse about enhancing the eyes. She said they had a stock of a “couple hundred pairs” of fake eyelashes!

These insider tips are good news for real women who think glamorous looks are too hard to do. With extensions, tools like bun holders and a little advice from your hairstylist, you can make your hair Sparkle, too.

OMG! Miley Cyrus’ hair is super short and platinum blond. Do you like it?

Just when we thought Miley Cyrus had done it all, she made her boldest style move to date!

On Sunday Miley did something that was heard around the world: she had her hair cut into a pixie with a buzz on the side. While the drastic makeover seems spur-of-the-moment, it’s not. On August 6 Miley tweeted photos of herself in shoulder-length, white blond locks. Hairstylist Chris McMillan did the honors on both of the new dos. McMillan is famous for creating “The Rachel” for Jennifer Aniston, and Miley asked him for something similar. She got a pretty Rachel-like lob (long bob), but that was only a preview of what was to come. Just a week later, Chris completed the Miley makeover that conjures up images of Victoria “Posh” Beckham.

Even before the latest do-overs, Miley was taking mini steps toward the big change. On July 14 she sent followers the photo above right to announce that she had gone blond. If you’re wondering why she’s puckering up, Miley explains, “Now that I’m blonde I gotta give duck lips in every photo.” The photo on left was taken in between then and the top two dos. While there’s been a wild mix of reactions to the final cut, there seems to be consensus that it was time for that high bun to go!

While we were finishing this post, rumors had already started circulating that Miley is hiding her new hair or maybe regretting it. Personally we think she was trying to avoid the paparazzi while walking with her fiance. It will be interesting to see how long Miley will keep the do before grabbing onto some extensions. And since she and Liam are planning a long engagement, anything can happen before the wedding.

Who wore the best Teen Choice Hairstyle? Victoria Justice, Nikki Reed, Gwen Stefani, JoJo, Candice Accola or …

Previously at realhairstyles.net: we introduced the Teen Choice Hairstyles Poll. This concludes our series (for now. After we tally the votes, we will feature the winners). Choose your faves here and go back to the first post to place your ballot!

Victoria Justice goes au naturel in her long, straight, shiny style!
Nikki Reed‘s high-fashion hair looks like an upsweep from the front, but it’s a ponytail in back!

Vanessa Marano and Candice Accola both wear curvy hair fashions, but the similarity ends there. Van’s waves get thicker and thus more luscious as they flow from the crown down. Candice keeps her hair smooth all over, so that even the spiral curls are sleek.

Gwen Stefani and Peyton List both wore white-hot haircolor in totally different ways. While Gwen went straight and sleek, Peyton played up “retro.” We can’t make up our mind whether we like the updo or not, but it’s definitely unique!

We’re going to give you a hint about who we thought was one of the worst-tressed of the night (and it’s not the blonde). Meaghan Martin‘s mane is perfectly pretty with healthy-looking, layered, loose curls. On the other hand, JoJo‘s locks are way overdue for a cut and need help from a hair stylist.

Sasha Pieterse follows her peers who can’t resist wearing hair swept to one side. Hers is distinguised with a smooth top and loose curls below. Rebecca Black might not have the best ‘do of the night, but we like it! She’s managed to blend the wild color trend into an otherwise calm coif.

Who wore the best Teen Choice hairstyle? Crystal Reed, Lucy Hale, Bella Thorne, Nina Dobrev, Jordin Sparks or …

In the previous post, we started a Reader’s Poll of hairstyles from the Teen Choice Awards. Here’s more ‘dos for you to consider. Take a good look at these and the following, and then return to the first post to make your choice(s)!

Crystal Reed rolls one side up and sweeps the rest back.
Lucy Hale‘s side braid is knotted at the shoulder for a one-of-a-kind look.

Bella Thorne contrasts a smooth crown with spiral curls.
Laura Marano chose one of today’s trendiest hairstyles–the sidesweep.

Ashley Rickards and Debby Ryan had the same idea when it came to their hair for the Teen Choice Awards. They both have bangs and straight locks. Ashley’s color is darker and her bangs are angled. Debby has light bangs and a slightly off-center part.

Nina Dobrev looks like she didn’t do much to her hair besides adding a barely visible braid on top of her straight mane. Jordin Sparks makes a smart choice wearing her hair back to show off her pretty face and fashion.

Now that Portia di Rossi has cut her hair short, she and Ellen DeGeneres are starting to look alike! But they’re still unique with Ellen going shorter and layered while Portia goes a bit long without layers.

Charlize Theron finally reveals her shaved head and gears up for ‘Mad Max’!

For half the month of June, Charlize covered up her hairless head whenever she went out in public i.e. whenever the paparazzi might have a shot of catching up with her!

You’d have to be living on another planet not to know that Charlize Theron shaved her head. Or, then again, you might not care about celeb style news, but in that case you wouldn’t be reading this. Anyone who IS interested has noticed that Char has been wearing hats (fedora or beanie) ever since she had her hair shaved off on June 6.

We first saw the new ‘do on June 24 when she was photographed without a hat and with her adorable son Jackson. They were snapped in Namibia, Africa where she was gearing up for filming of Mad Max: Thunder Road (the reason she sheared her lockx in the first place!). Even though the candid pic is fuzzy as all get-out, you can tell she’s still gorgeous, proving what we knew all along–she’s one of the few elite who don’t need hair to be beautiful!!! We don’t have to tell you who the others are, but we will: Natalie Portman, Agyness Deyn, Janet Jackson, Demi Moore and Anne Hathaway. Other hairless celebs (who look only OK in buzz cuts) are Natalie Maines and Cynthia Nixon.

After she shaved her medium-length mane, we wondered what took her so long. The barely-there hair would have been perfect for futuristic Prometheus. Or she could have worn her hair slicked back for Mad Max as she did to play an Ice Queen in the first sci-fi. (Perhaps the frigid look was too pretty for the down-and-dirty Max movie.) Or she could have shaved her hair earlier for Prom. A less-daring, less-dedicated actress could have worn a bald wig that could be made totally realistic with today’s fabulous fakes and creative hairstylists.

Here’s what we think: the Oscar winner wouldn’t want to look the same as she did in her last movie. We know from her complete transformation in Monster that she is willing to go to all the way to becoming a new woman for a role.

What’s next for Charlize? When will she start growing out her hair? Will it be after Mad Max is a wrap or will she stick with it for a while just for the shock value? Please tell us what you think!

Carey Mulligan’s Hair: A Continuing ‘Education’ in Style

Carey Mulligan’s short hair still stands out…

After An Education, Carey cut off her long mane that worked so well for that movie set in the ’60s. In a darling short cut, the Oscar-nominated star was almost unrecognizable at the Academy Awards 2012. Since that time, Carey as changed her hair often but never gone back to long hair. Her commitment to short hair puts her in the ranks of daring stars like Michelle Williams, Emma Watson and recently Charlize Theron, who shaved her head for a role in the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. No matter whether it’s for fun or work, going super-short takes a lot of guts.

How does Carey keep her cropped cut fresh?

By giving it new twists…like the modern-day pompadour she donned for the 2012 Met Ball on May 7. Her updo reflects the giddy look of her newlywed status. (She married Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons on April 21 and the Met Ball was her first appearance as a new bride!). Keeping hair longer on top offers the versatility to lift the crown away from a side part using a blow-dryer and round brush. Short hair that’s not buzzed on the sides would need to be combed back and held in place with gel. Strong-hold styling products before and after help make and hold the wave.

Bold and beautiful hair color

Light blond on top softens the crop and the dark base adds interesting dimension. As is the case with Carey’s short cut, not everyone can wear bold, contrasting shades. Don’t even think about wearing it if you don’t have a talented hair colorist!

Hairstory repeats itself

Carey’s short hair looks tailor-made for her role with Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby coming out in December. Here are a couple of examples of how her Flapper ‘do fits the setting—the Roaring Twenties.

Emma Stone Hair Style Alert: dramatic new ‘do at Paris premiere of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Faux bob, fingerwaves and platinum color add up to Femme Fatale

Emma Stone has done it again–turned the fashion world upside down with one of her mini makeovers. She made a Grander than Grand Entrance to the Parisian premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man. We’re calling the look “Retro Glam,” but other critics are saying it’s Goth, too washed-out, even vampire-ish. The naysayers are mainly referring to her makeup and the gown’s color, Black, which Em usually avoids on the Red Carpet.

How did Emma’s hairstylist Mara Roszak achieve the look?

Before she did a thing, Mara looked to the Gucci gown for inspiration, and she got it immediately! The Paris location also sparked her imagination, knowing that “I wanted to go for something really glamorous with a classic feel,” she told elle.com.

Hairstyling started with rough, air drying and mousse. Next she used a 1″ barrel-size curling iron on small sections of hair, followed by a pin-curl set. The hair was spritzed with a light hairspray, and allowed to sit for about five minutes. Using a gentle touch when brushing out the curls was key in maintaining what Mara calls an “S”-wave. Around the face, Mara used wave clips to hold the shape of the style until it was time for the final shaping and spraying. She lightly teased hair above the neck and then secured one side under, double-crossing the bobby pins for added hold. Finally, “I sprayed all over with Moroccanoil Finishing Spray.”

Check back later for updates on Emma’s ever-changing mane!

Side-Swept Hairstyles from ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ ‘Twilight,’ ‘Total Recall’ & TV: Lucy Hale, Nikki Reed, Kristen Stewart, Kate Beckinsale & Louise Roe

Get swept away with star style!

It’s not that unusual for stars to wear their hair swept to one side, but they don’t always achieve as much variety as they did at the MTV Movie Awards 2012.

Lucy Hale looks too sweet to play a role on Pretty Little Liars. She oozes innocence wearing her hair in loose waves swept over the shoulder. In this case, Lucy’s hair is really blowing in the wind, but you can get the wind-blown effect using the strongest-hold hair spray you can find. Lift and shape hair with your fingers while spritzing.

Nikki Reed, best known for the Twilight movies, probably inherited good style genes from her hairdresser-beautician mom Cheryl. She knows a good hairstyle when she sees one, and she’s not afraid to try new things. For the MTV Awards, the actress/screenwriter/model wore a one-of-a-kind look that’s a new twist on retro glamour. It’s based on waves created either with finger-shaping, gel and clips or a waving iron. After the “set,” hair is secured in back with the other side left loose to hug the cheek. Obviously, impeccable makeup is required for the finishing touch.

At star-studded events, Kate Beckinsale barely resembles her character Selene from the Underworld, and we know she won’t be dressed up like this in the Total Recall movie due out in August. We’re not going to lie to you and say this ‘do is easy to copy. Not everyone has hair this long, thick and able to hold for 30 minutes (much less all night). Even if you meet these requirements, we would suggest getting hair styled in a salon the first time. If you’re good with your hair and really want to try it at home, concentrate on building volume with a blow-drier, volumizing product and jumbo-sized round brush. Then set hair on big rollers or using a waving iron. Another option is securing hair before curling it.

What was stylist.com thinking when it placed Louise Roe on the 17 worst-dressed stars at the MTV Movie Awards? Maybe we’re biased because we judge Red Carpet-looks mainly on the hairstyle. And even though her gown wasn’t the best, it wasn’t the worst either. We’re not going to waste room showing Louise’s head-to-toe fashion. More important are that her sidesweep is the curliest shown here. Defined ringlets are enhanced with subtle ombré coloring that gets gradually lighter through bottom half of her mane. The second photo reveals how pretty hair looks flowing over a bare shoulder.

While Kristen Stewart‘s hair isn’t the prettiest shown here, we HAD to include it because she often wears her hair swept to one side. Long layers start around the shoulders, and they are blended so well that they would be nearly invisible if they were styled smooth and straight. Unless your hair is incredibly curly, wavy or will hold a curl, you will need to allow a lot of time and product to do the Twilight look. It would help to practice ahead of time until you can get the thick, lifted mix of loose curls and waves.

‘That’s My Boy’ Horrible Movie, Great Hairstyles: Leighton Meester, Ciara, Eva Amurri, Rebecca Marshall, Crystal Allen, Abigail Klein & Carrie Wiita

We’re bringing the ‘dos to you, so you don’t have to go to them!

There are more women than you would expect in a movie about boys, and they wear good hairstyles that would work for real women. Before we get to the hairstyles, give us a moment to rant: That’s My Boy earned zero stars from one leading film critic. The buzz ranges from negative to more negative with reviewers saying Sandler has outdone himself in raunchiness! The photo at the bottom of this post depicts the over-grown boy in a hot tub with seven women, which isn’t necessarily bad, but Sandler makes it so.

Poor Leighton Meester plays the lead among a group of female characters who are doomed from the start. Judging from her photo at the movie’s premiere, it looks like Leighton survived beautifully. Loose curls, side bangs and realistic hair color add up to a style that’s pretty practical for women who have medium- to long-length hair.

Moving onto the other pawns, there’s Ciara in a classic coif with a new twist– a single braid peeking out from luscious waves. Contrasting black and blond color isn’t for everyone, but Ciara knows how to work it!

Eva Amurri Martino plays it cool by wearing an updo. You can tell the hair has been blow-dried first because it’s full and lifted in front. Meanwhile Crystal Allen always keeps her cool in a short style that takes little maintenance because the shape is built into the cut–graduated from short on bottom to longer on top.  For extra oomph, the shorty can be blow-dried with a round brush. If you have long bangs, let them fall forward, naturally!

Abigail Klein & Carrie Wiita like to wear their long hair curly, but they do it different ways: Abby wears them loose, Carrie goes with spirals. To get A.K.’s look, blow-dry hair with a round brush held vertically. Follow with a quick set using a large-barreled curling iron. As you can imagine, C.W.’s curls take more time and attention. You can start like Abigail, but more important is styling with a medium-size curling iron. Use small sections of hair and alternate the direction, going forward on one curl, back on the next. We suggest getting the look done at a salon first and watching carefully while it is being done.

From the front, Rebecca Marshall seems to be wearing a normal bun, but the side view reveals something more–a curly ponytail, lifted crown and a better view of the ringlets in front.

There’s more we could talk about, but we’re getting sick of thinking about the man who turns a long-lost son story into a tragcom. So goodbye, Adam, and good riddance!
