VMAs Hairstyles…starring Rihanna in super short hair plus Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato

We hope you had a chance to watch or record the MTV Video Music Awards last night…especially if you want (or need) a new hairstyle.

If you haven’t watched the VMAs yet, go to hollywoodlife.com. or click on the photo above. For us, Rihanna was the mane news last night. Unless you read about it right before the awards show, Rihanna cutting off her hair came as a big surprise. Our response: We love, love, love it!

While Ri got most of our attention, there were plenty of other hair headliners. Some are saying the newly shorn star was inspired by Miley Cyrus, Elisabeth Moss, Emma Watson (who has grown out her hair) and Anne Hathaway (who’s in the process of going longer).

Speaking of Miley, she took an unexpected twist by wearing her hair up in a of-the-moment pompadour. She’s able to lift her short cut because the crown is longer than the base.

Taylor didn’t look much different on the Red Carpet, but why should she? Her glam looks work well for any gala, and little changes make her hair seem brand new. The darker, curly hair she sported for COVERGIRL were replaced by white  blond, straight locks.

We were about to say Demi didn’t wear a new look, but then we realized she had gone from dip-dye purple to a bright blond ombre! Knowing Ms. Lovato she’ll be changing up her mane today or in the near future (with help from extensions, temp color, whatever).

That’s all we have time for now, but we’ll get back to the award-winning hairstyles ASAP!

Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss cuts and colors her hair like Twiggy’s (not like Miley’s!)

Some say Elisabeth has pulled a “Miley.”
We say, “No way!” What do you think?

Elisabeth Moss, a.k.a. Mad Woman Peggy Olson, has taken a page out of the ’60s by cutting her hair into a super-short Pixie popularized by Twiggy. For those of you who are too young to know who Twiggy was, take it from us. We wanted to look like her—more for her hair than for the stick thin figure that insired her name. (Back then we didn’t have to worry about being stick thin!)

Many writers are saying that Elisabeth was inspired by Miley Cyrus, who they are now calling a trendsetter. We couldn’t disagree more with the Miley comparison. First of all, Ms. Moss’ new shortcut has more class and is much more flattering than Ms. Cyrus’. (And we’re sure the new blonde won’t be desperately seeking attention with non-stop tweets!)

Secondly, Elisabeth has more in common with Emma Watson who went super short, pretty and sophisticated two years ago. Thirdly, the Pixie’s perfect for the retro Mad Men (even though Elisabeth is acting coy and saying she will be wearing wigs to make Peggy look the same next season).

And last, but certainly not least, E. wanted to try something new. “I wanted to do something really different,” she told US Weekly last Tuesday when interviewed at the premiere of For a Good Time, Call…

No matter what the reason, we think Elisabeth’s do-over is a winner!

Carey Mulligan’s Hair: A Continuing ‘Education’ in Style

Carey Mulligan’s short hair still stands out…

After An Education, Carey cut off her long mane that worked so well for that movie set in the ’60s. In a darling short cut, the Oscar-nominated star was almost unrecognizable at the Academy Awards 2012. Since that time, Carey as changed her hair often but never gone back to long hair. Her commitment to short hair puts her in the ranks of daring stars like Michelle Williams, Emma Watson and recently Charlize Theron, who shaved her head for a role in the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. No matter whether it’s for fun or work, going super-short takes a lot of guts.

How does Carey keep her cropped cut fresh?

By giving it new twists…like the modern-day pompadour she donned for the 2012 Met Ball on May 7. Her updo reflects the giddy look of her newlywed status. (She married Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons on April 21 and the Met Ball was her first appearance as a new bride!). Keeping hair longer on top offers the versatility to lift the crown away from a side part using a blow-dryer and round brush. Short hair that’s not buzzed on the sides would need to be combed back and held in place with gel. Strong-hold styling products before and after help make and hold the wave.

Bold and beautiful hair color

Light blond on top softens the crop and the dark base adds interesting dimension. As is the case with Carey’s short cut, not everyone can wear bold, contrasting shades. Don’t even think about wearing it if you don’t have a talented hair colorist!

Hairstory repeats itself

Carey’s short hair looks tailor-made for her role with Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby coming out in December. Here are a couple of examples of how her Flapper ‘do fits the setting—the Roaring Twenties.

Jordin Sparks set to ‘Sparkle’ in movie by the same name!

Wearing glam hair and fashion, Jordin looks every bit of the movie star she is becoming with the release of Sparkle in August.*

At Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, Jordin stood out from the crowd, bringing a breath of fresh air to an industry that can be jaded, not-so-pretty and just plain tired.

Here you can see why the American Idol has become a style icon. Her look is an inventive mix of Retro and Avant-Garde. Close up, Jordin’s gown has a futuristic vibe with its slit-neck, notched bodice. But a full-figure view reveals the feminine skirt flowing from the leather top.

A fringe benefit of the strapless couture is the bare décolletage that draws all eyes up to Jordin’s striking facial features, which are also highlighted with hair swept back. Impeccable makeup and elegant earrings polish off the look.

Jordin’s hairstyle is fairly easy for anyone who has thick, curly locks. Simply apply your fave styling product to damp hair. Scrunch while drying naturally or while using a diffused blow-dryer. Comb hair back but loosen it before securing for a softer finish.

*Jordin and Whitney Houston  worked together in the movie Sparkle and contributed to the soundtrack. Their Celebrate duet from the film was the last song Whitney recorded before her untimely death.

Lisa Marie Presley’s hairstyles: fresh looks suit her new ‘Storm & Grace’ album

A pretty makeover is perfectly timed with the release of her new album, LISA MARIE PRESLEY STORM & GRACE…

As one writer puts it: Lisa Marie must have discovered Jennifer Lopez’s secrets for staying young. We think it has more to do with her mother Priscilla who’s never looked her age. As for her voice, that comes from her father and she does have some of

The glam side of Lisa Marie
Though the top and bottom photos were obviously taken at different times, they depict a totally new image for LMP. Most of our memories of Ms. Presley in years past are of a punkish, tough-guy girl who did rebellious acts such as marrying Michael Jackson, wearing military clothes and doing forgettable albums.

The glam side of Lisa Marie
The retro Hollywood waves and girly fashions resemble a young Priscilla in Graceland even though Lisa Marie is 44 years of age! One hint that it’s current is the trendy ombre-like effect of light blond that’s growing out from the dark roots.

A stormy & graceful mood
As her hair continues to get longer, the ombre coloring carries on, but it’s more platinum than golden blond. While her hair is unrealistically styled into the sexy wind-blown look, you can easily see how ends have been snipped into long layers to add volume and blended so that they can be styled to look one length.

We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves and spill all the details about her hairstyle and color until we know you’re interested.

Lisa Marie Presley must have inherited good genes from Priscilla & Elvis

As one writer puts it: Lisa Marie must have discovered Jennifer Lopez’s secrets for staying young. We think it has more to do with her mother Priscilla. As for her voice, those genes seem to come from her father (but we won’t dwell on that because she’s trying to break away from the “daughter of Elvis” label).

In a future post, we hope to gather some photos of Lisa now and her mom in her 40s and show them side by side so you can see the similarities. Until then, you’ll have to take our word that the top image is pure Priscilla!

Reader’s Poll: What kind of hairstyles do you look for online?

When you “search” hairstyle ideas, what key words do you use? Celebrities, non-celebs, TV stars, singers, models, hairstyles, etc.

Originally, when we started realhairstyles.net, our goal was to present celebrity hairstyles that work in real life, but sometimes we get carried away showing celebrity hair fashions and what we think about them.

Now we think it’s high time to ask you how you think we’re doing. Would you rather have more details about how to do the styles? Or would you like us to continue going in the same direction as we have in the past?

Celebrity Blondes: Avengers’ Scarlett Johansson, Mad Men’s January Jones, Glee-ful Dianna Agron & more

Featuring straight, curly, wavy, up, down, short to long

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala is considered THE style event of the year…yes, bigger than the Academy Awards show, Golden Globes, Emmys. It’s been nicknamed the Oscars of the East Coast or the Fashion Oscars. With the spotlight on glamour, the Met presents more than enough hairstyle ideas for Real Women. Of course, many of the ‘dos are unrealistic…unless you have the time and money to spare and/or you have a celeb hairstylist at your beck and call.

Since so many great hairstyles showed up at this year’s Ball, we decided to feature a few at a time. Here, the spotlight is on some of the beautiful blondes at the High Society event.

Scarlett Johannson’s Wavy Bob
When we saw Scarlett on the Red Carpet, it hit us that loose waves without layers have become a timeless style like a straight bob, pixie or upsweep. While the wavy style looks easy to do, it’s really not…unless your hair is naturally this way. Tighter curls would have to be smoothed out and straighter hair would need lots o’ help from a waving iron or a very loose perm.

Amber Valetta’s Sleek Waves
Glamorous hairstyles are no big deal for models like Ms. Valetta. But for women like us, nothing could be more special (or harder to achieve)! Anyone who’s not rich and famous would have to spend an hour or more at home or up to half a day in a salon to recreate the hair fashion. Most types of hair would have to be blown dry using small sections at a time. Then working again with small sections, curl hair vertically with a medium-to-large barrel styling iron. Let hair dry thoroughly before brushing gently and finishing with your fave holding product.

Chloe Sevigny’s Chic Short Cut
Meanwhile Ms. Sevigny could almost comb her hair and go to get ready for Big Love Nights. But you know THAT wouldn’t cut it for divas who are going to be in the limelight. (It’s funny to see a star like Chloe making what looks like a mistake with her hair…it’s messed up on the left side or is it just sticking out too much?!) The layered, short cut looks more polished when it’s blown-dry after applying a texturizing product to damp hair. Curl a few tendrils around the face and fingerbrush.

After looking closely at her to write this post, we realized that Chloe is either nude or wearing nude-colored undergarments. While it might be obvious to you, we think it’s a kind of subtle way to draw attention to yourself. The bloggers at gofugyourself.com would call the bare beauty anything but subtle! Writing about Chloe in their Fug or Fab category, they say, “Yes, she’s bedecked chiefly in hot pants and mirrors. If only she’d opted to look in one of them.” (If you’re into snarky comments about Celebrity Style, visit the Fug Girls.)

Dianna Agron’s Curly Upsweep
Natural curls don’t require much prompting to get tressed up like this. Simply scrunch while drying with a diffused blow-drier or squeeze and lift curls continuously while they are drying naturally. Brush out the crown before sweeping hair back. Loosen lots of curls on one side and a few on the other. Secure with bobby pins underneath in back and spray.

January Jones’ Sleek Bob
We love to follow Miss January to marvel at the ways she combines pretty hairstyles with hot trends. And it’s fun to see her sometimes questionable fashion choices (like a glaring yellow gown with details on the bodice that emphasis the corset detailing and resemble a cartoon vampire.) As for her hair, is there a little pink left from when she added the streak months ago? Actually the Mad (wo)Men’s hairstyle needs little embellishment. The straight blunt cut is classic and looks its best with meticulous blow-dry styling.

Scarlett Johansson’s wavy hair on The Hollywood Walk of Fame

Celebrity Hairstyle matches trend-setting star
Of-the-moment glamour waves reflect Scarlett’s bold sense of style as she receives her Star on the famous sideWalk in California. Few celebs have what it takes to wear all of their hair smoothed back except for a wavy crown with a slight pompadour. Getty Image.

Rita Hayworth’s and Jennifer Lopez’s hairstyles: great looks are timeless!

Anyone who likes to try new hairstyles knows that old movies are a great place to look for ideas. Of course, some of those retro looks are too outdated or nearly impossible to recreate.

On the other hand, some styles are easier to do today because of the variety of tools and product. Here, Jennifer Lopez has her hair blown dry smooth and then curled using a barrel curling iron with a diameter of one to one-and-a-half inch. Then spritz on a styling spray and set hair in pin curls. Keep the bobby pins in for as long as possible (ideally an hour). Use your fingers to gently smooth hair out and into place. Spray with your favorite holding/shine product. For J.Lo, the finishing touch was Oribe Superfine Hairspray.
