Britney Spears’ hair makeovers: new looks for ‘X Factor,’ ‘Till the World Ends’ & more!

“Britney’s back!”
that’s what entertainment writers are saying about Ms. Spears. They are referring to the revival of her career, evidenced in her new role as an X Factor judge and her video/ad ‘Till The World Ends (Twister Remix). Others are raving about B’s new bikini bod. While that’s all well and good, we say “Britney’s back” because of her hair and style. In the past she has made bad choices like going bald and letting her extensions fall out. So far her new ‘dos have been pretty good.

As usual, Brit doesn’t stick with one style—she prefers to mix it up. Her Facebook profile photo (at top of post) is sleek, platinum blond and falls just below the shoulders. At X Factor auditions (above), she’s flaunting loose curls and a slightly off-center part (but that day her hair didn’t get as much attention as her cleavage).

Just days ago, the pop princess debuted multicolored dip-dye ends that are everywhere these days with celebs and real women alike. The teal, blue and hot pink tips came out at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas last weekend. Inspired by My Little Pony (and X Factor co-judge Demi Lovato?), her mane stayed streaked on Monday. With all of Simon Cowell’s dislike for Ms. Spears’ wardrobe, we’re wondering if he’ll ban the dip-dye. (But how can he nix Brit’s color scheme without banning Demi’s?)

During promos for X-Factor, the bombshell blonde was simply lovely in the straight but full, unlayered locks that she often favors. Also in the pre-season promos, one of her Celebrity Hairstyles was spiral curled for a modern update on crimpy curls. To copy her loose curls, use a waving or curling iron. To keep that soft, sexy look, don’t brush out the curls; just finger them gently into place and spritz on a strong-hold hair spray.

As for the bleached blond color, don’t even think about doing it yourself! Go to a salon and have it done by a professional colorist. The experts at celebrityhaircolorguide.com explain the type of techniques your colorist should use. They recommend Organic Color Systems ammonia-free formula in two shades of white for foil highlights then a regrowth color cream at the roots and sporadically through the ends. For styling products, they recommend Cocktailing Hydrate Leave-In, Gloss Serum and Mousse.

In other news, Brit has been having lots of fun showing off her trim and toned figure. In a recent tweet, she included a photo of herself in a bikini with this message: “Y’all ready for summer to end? I’m definitely not!” A photo that she posted on Facebook recently showed the pop princess in a little top and cut-offs. Even though the pop princess has been working out regularly, US Weekly says the photo of her in a white bikini is four years old!

It doesn’t matter what the critics say about her body. Who needs a stick-thin figure when she has everything else going for her? It will be interesting to see if the former Disney star is able to recoup her title as top pop princess.

‘The Bachelorette’: You told us you want to know more about Emily Maynard’s hair…so here it is!

Forget the rumors that Bachelorette Emily Maynard is already cheating on fiancé Jef. Ignore the related gossip about Emily sexting with Oakland Raiders Quarterback Matt Leinart.

The mane thing to remember is how much you like Emily’s hair. During the season news about her looks were a frequent topic of conversation. Some called her a diva, who was overly stressed about her hair. Others, such as her personal hairstylist Denise Antonacci, say Em is as sweet as she seemed on air.

Denise is a stylist/colorist at the Jon Ric Hair Spa in Charlotte, NC. In between Emily’s stint on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Denise suggested that Em change her hair to fit her age flatter her features. Emily agreed, so Ms. Antonacci used a balayage technique and foil highlighting to create a sandy blond color. Denise likes to leave the roots darker for a realistic, imperfect look popular with women today. The haircut changes were minimal—just a trim of the ends and the long layers.

According to Denise, Emily didn’t wear extensions during The Bachelorette because she was concerned they would be obvious when swimming or in her close-up kissing scenes. Ms. Antonacci says Em put in extensions after filming and before the flurry of promotions that followed. (We’re not sure we believe she didn’t wear extensions during the show. See the photo at right of mother and daughter, Ricki, which appeared on Huffington Post with this caption: “Sorry but that hair cannot all be real.”)

As for conditioning, Denise told Allure.com that Emily had some damage on her ends from blow-drying. “So we used the Kérastase Nutri-Thermique  Masque and some express in-salon treatments. She also uses the Kérastase Bain Satin 1 Shampoo, the Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique Leave-In Conditioner, and Leonor Greyl Serum de Soie Sublimateur to prevent frizz.”

Although Emily had lots of help from Denise and the show’s stylist, she’s experienced doing her own hair at home. In a Reader’s Poll we did, your fave look of Em’s is the large spiral curls (featured on top). In a Twitterview, InStyle asked Emily, “What do you use to curl your hair?” She answered, “I use a Sultra Beauty Bombshell Curling Wand. It’s impossible to mess up!”

More often than not, the former Bachelorette wears her hair smooth with a little curl on the ends. To get that look, Emily blow-dries her hair with a Supersolano blow-dryer and an Ibiza medium-size round brush. (Denise also uses the Solano dryer to make her client’s hair shiny and smooth).

When the reality star’s hair is completely dry, she curls it on jumbo-sized Velcro® curlers, working with small sections, rolling hair away from the face and vertically on the sides. She leaves the rollers in until she’s ready to go out and then spritzes on hairspray. Emily is a firm believer of Velcro® rollers. When she was on The Bachelor, her roomies liked them so much they wanted to know everything about them!

If you need extra help to hold the curl, apply a styling product before inserting the Velcros and use a blow-dryer on each roller for about 20 to 30 seconds. After that, leave the rollers in for 10 to 15 minutes more to “set” the curl.

For a sleeker style, Emily does the same thing but skips the Velcros. You don’t even have to curl all your hair; simply give the ends a little twist with the iron. Soften the curl immediately after releasing it from the iron.

And no story about The Bachelorette would be complete without the casual coifs she wore on the show. Her ponytail (above) was a big hit with the boys and fans of the show. For one beach scene the blonde had a carefree look polished off with a braid in front.

Here are a few more of Emily’s favorite things for her hair: WEN® Cleansing Conditioner; Neutrogena’s Anti-Residue Shampoo (once a week); TRESemme 24 Hour Body Hair Spray; Aveda hair spray, and Iso Beauty Hair Straightener Flat Iron.

There’s more we could say about Emily’s hair, but we’ll leave that for another time.

‘Sparkle’ style: Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter, Carmen Ejogo and the late Whitney Houston

Everything about ‘Sparkle’ sparkles

from the three sisters

to Jordin Sparks as ‘Sparkle’

to their mother played by Whitney Houston
in her last movie before her untimely death

You wouldn’t guess from the top photo that doing the hairstyles for Sparkle was relatively easy…but they were because of wigs!

The movie’s hairstylist Kim Kimble explained her reliance on fabulous fakes to 8makeup.com. “Wigs were the quickest way to change the hair,” says Kim. The hair wardrobe included about 200 wigs with tools such as 20 boxes of hair pins and 36 cans of hair spray.

8makeup also spoke to the movie’s makeup artist Marietta Carter-Narcisse about enhancing the eyes. She said they had a stock of a “couple hundred pairs” of fake eyelashes!

These insider tips are good news for real women who think glamorous looks are too hard to do. With extensions, tools like bun holders and a little advice from your hairstylist, you can make your hair Sparkle, too.

‘Bachelorette’ Finale: sneak peek at Emily Maynard’s style

Beautiful hair, beautiful setting, not-so-beautiful dress…that’s what we predict for the last night of Bachelorette!

Beautiful hair
Em made a great hairstyle choice for the Final Rose Show. The smooth crown breaks into waves and then loose spiral curls. We really like the look because it’s realistic and pretty easy to do at home. One option is using waving and curling irons after blow-drying.

A side view of her hair shows that her waves are not overdone. Their “messy” texture fits today’s trends. If your hair has natural body, you could apply a strong-hold product and scrunch while blow-drying with a diffuser.

Beautiful setting, not-so-beautiful dress
You’re used to seeing gorgeous scenery during the season, but the finale in Curacao will appear more exotic. Here, luscious flowers detract attention from Em, and that’s a good thing! From the front, the gown’s fitted top and full skirt are unbalanced and make her look bottom heavy–hiding the truth that she’s ultra petite.

Do you agree with any of our last-minute thoughts?

‘Bachelorette’ finale: can you believe Emily Maynard stressed about her looks all season?

According to Us Weekly, the wanna-be fiancée has worried about her looks from the start. She became even more distressed as the season progressed.

Unbelievable!  When has Emily ever looked anything but gorgeous on air? Is she seeing things when she looks in a mirror? While her insecurities don’t make sense to us, we CAN believe the rumors of breast implants, veneers, a nose job, diva-like behavior, conniving for her own show and her desire to be famous.

“She literally cried” when she was unhappy with her on-air ‘dos, makeup and fashions, an insider told Us. The tears extended to anything else she didn’t like about the show.

Here’s some reasons for our skepticism:
• The Bachelorette has a team of talented hairstylists, makeup artists and fashion experts at her beck and call.
• Emily’s good with her hair and has great taste.
• The media have repeatedly written and talked about how pretty she is. Some writers call her a “sweetie.”

We don’t really know what to think about her hyper-critisms. Is it all a plot to draw attention to herself? Does she compare herself with beauties like Charlize Theron, Emma Stone, etc., etc.?

No matter what her delusions are we have to say: “Get a grip!” Of course, it doesn’t matter what we think. This installment of the Emily show is almost over, and she’s ready for her spin-off.

Stay tuned for details about the Bachelorette’s hairstyles.

Question about ‘The Bachelorette’: do you like Emily Maynard’s hair?

From everything we’ve read about The Bachelorette, it seems like you LOVE Emily Maynard’s hair. We agree that her blond mane’s pretty, but we think it’s time-consuming and not practical for real women…unless you’re great with your hair or have help from a celebrity stylist. With the loves of her life now narrowed down to Jef and Arie, there’s little time to left to talk about this season’s Bachelorette. We don’t want to go into a lot of detail about her hairdo how-tos until we know that you’re interested. Hence the reader’s poll below.

Paris & Nicky Hilton: can’t you afford to have better hair?

For all the money they have, you’d think the Hilton sisters would have the best manes in the world!

Maybe their high opinion of themselves says, “We DO have the best looks money can buy.” Perhaps they feel that designer fashions and jewelry are enough.

Watching them at the MTV Movie Awards, we couldn’t help notice how bad their hair is. We wonder if they even attempt to get a natural-looking hair color? Paris’ bleached-out blond looks like a white T-shirt that has “yellowed” after too many washings. Nicki’s shade is less bitter, but not much better. Both hair colors lack dimension and personality. Like most women, they let a bit of their dark roots show, but Paris goes too far showing her roots around the face.

They also seem oblivious to the sickly condition of their strands. Paris’ mane is thicker than Nicki’s yet it thins into spiky split ends. Meanwhile, Nicki could have had a cute cut IF she had maintained the angled fringe. Nicki’s lack of hair is even more noticeable where pieces get lumped together. The more we look at them, the more their hair reminds us of worn-out brooms.

While their hair is horrible, their stilted poses were the first thing that got our attention on Sunday. What we really want to know: are the Hilton sisters robots, aliens, zombies or escapees from a wax museum?

Take another look at the Hiltons. There’s not much difference between the top two photos; it seems like the sissies didn’t move in between shots and every hair stayed in place. Their arms are “glued” around their waists as celeb sisters are wont to do (think the Olsen twins). We don’t see any difference in Paris between the first and 2nd look, but the full-figure view shows Paris stuck sticking out her derriere (or is it just the angle?). In contrast to Paris’ frozen smile, Nicki has vacant eyes and non-expressive lips. Oh yeah, Nicki rotates her head ever-so-slightly. In yet another pose, the two prove they are alive: Nicki kicks up her feet, while Paris lifts her right arm and breaks her smile…but they still have bad hair!

Jordin Sparks set to ‘Sparkle’ in movie by the same name!

Wearing glam hair and fashion, Jordin looks every bit of the movie star she is becoming with the release of Sparkle in August.*

At Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, Jordin stood out from the crowd, bringing a breath of fresh air to an industry that can be jaded, not-so-pretty and just plain tired.

Here you can see why the American Idol has become a style icon. Her look is an inventive mix of Retro and Avant-Garde. Close up, Jordin’s gown has a futuristic vibe with its slit-neck, notched bodice. But a full-figure view reveals the feminine skirt flowing from the leather top.

A fringe benefit of the strapless couture is the bare décolletage that draws all eyes up to Jordin’s striking facial features, which are also highlighted with hair swept back. Impeccable makeup and elegant earrings polish off the look.

Jordin’s hairstyle is fairly easy for anyone who has thick, curly locks. Simply apply your fave styling product to damp hair. Scrunch while drying naturally or while using a diffused blow-dryer. Comb hair back but loosen it before securing for a softer finish.

*Jordin and Whitney Houston  worked together in the movie Sparkle and contributed to the soundtrack. Their Celebrate duet from the film was the last song Whitney recorded before her untimely death.

Rihanna’s hairstyle on ‘American Idol’ brought to you via devoted fan!

A dramatic ‘do that reaches for the stars…
just like the heavenly beauty that is Rihanna!

Our special thanks go out to @RihannaDaily who tweeted this photo soon after RiRi’s show-stopping performance. We can’t tell you exactly how her stylists created the funtastic, fantasy-filled look, but you can bet we’re going to find out (esp. if we hear from readers who want to know). In the past our posts about Rihanna haven’t drawn a large audience. We don’t know why because we personally find her one of the premiere trendsetters of our time!

Celebrity Apprentice: Aubrey O’Day’s blond seems more natural than her ‘all-real’ red!

If it weren’t the finale, Aubrey’s new haircolor would have been big news. But that’s OK…it IS big news to hairstyle fashionistas!

The new hue takes the place of her bizarre haircolor that had come to be known as “clown” red. We have loved to hate her hair this season, especially when she said the brassy haircolor is “all real.” We thought she was joking when she said that to hair products guru Farouk. But in traditional stilted fashion of Celebrity Apprentice, no one laughed or even teasingly questioned her…yet their rolling eyes said it all.

At first, we thought the makeover was an effort to steal the spotlight for one last time. After seeing the new photos above from @AubreyODay, we realized why O’Day made the change: it’s better than her drop-dead red and better fits her “girls just wanna have fun” image.

We’d truly love to go on about Aubrey’s hair, but it’s getting late. And we don’t want to take away from the real news of the night: Arsenio Hall is the new Celebrity Apprentice, and Clay Aiken is his nearly equal runner-up!
