Mad Women hairstyles: January Jones, Christina Hendricks, Elisabeth Moss

The hairstyles from Mad Men are gone, but not forgotten!

While Mad Men revolves around the guys, they wouldn’t be anywhere without their women. More and more, the ladies are revealing there’s more to their characters than meets the eye. Their retro hairstyles make them look like spoiled housewives and sexy secretaries, and we could write off their demure dos as old-fashioned. But if you look hard enough, there are a few touches that are still around today. Betty Draper changes hairstyles like Don changes women, but glamour curls are a favorite. Now imagine if those curls were brushed out, slept in or wind-blown… the results would be pretty similar to January Jones’ modern mane. It’s a good thing we can copy the coif without going to a salon once a week (who has the time, money or desire to do that?). Styling with a round brush and blow-drier or a large curling iron are a couple of ways to do it.

The funny thing about Christina Hendricks’ current look is how similar it is to Joan’s (her character). They are both up-sweeps with a few curls left loose, but the older version has the pumped up crown of that era. Even though Joan is one of the hardest workers at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, she finds time to do her impeccable hair and makeup in the morning and keep it fresh all day and night.

Peggy Olson cares more about being a successful ad exec than how she looks. Every now and then Peggy HAS to play the femme fatale, but when she does, the results are beautiful. Actress Elisabeth Moss makes the transition possible with her classic good looks. Judging from pix of Elisabeth today, it seems like she favors romantic glamour styles in real life.

As time goes, it will be interesting to see how the fashions change on Mad Men and if we can get any style twists we can borrow!

The ‘Lost’ years: Evangeline Lilly’s hairstyles

Evangeline’s natural curly locks easily go
from very casual to dressy casual!
No matter how messy Evangeline Lilly’s hair gets on Lost, Kate stays a natural beauty! Even in her angst-filled moments, the actress is pretty in a quick bun. The rising star’s hairstyle had to be “done up” for early ABC shots, but it couldn’t be too over-the-top for the show’s setting. So for posed photos, Kate’s curls were scrunched a bit, brushed out on top. The gallery photo above shows how Kate would look if the Island(s) had a hairstylist… and she had the time between escapades. Notice how much longer Evangeline’s hair is near the series’ finale. Naturally the ringlets take more time to copy because they have to be scrunch dried until they’re thoroughly dry, finger combed and “frozen” with a strong-hold styling product.

The next pix are casual because of the hair (not the clothes). This rising star was wearing a sequined dress for a promo event, when she snuck out to get some fresh air. Notice how casual her hair looks when blown dry to loosen the ringlets… straighter hairstyles were something Kate never wore (unless she was in the sideways world of Lost). Kate could have pulled off a glam yet tousled updo like this one, but she’d need to polish up her Lost hairstyle. More casual glam is a sleek ponytail, this and a neat half upsweep would work on the show… if the dos were roughed up for the beach or forest.

A great example of dressy casual: Evangeline’s smooth hairstyle and impeccable makeup say fancy but the tank top says otherwise. While on the straighter side, ends are loosely curled and the crown combed back. As is the case with most of Kate’s “natural” looks, they translate into the real world with a little tweaking. Her standard wet look can stay as is with some kind of product to maintain the damp feel. If you have the patience, make some little braids (bigger than dreadlocks) or twist strands into the popular look of the moment.

Stay tuned for more about Lost, Kate, Claire, Jack, Sawyer, etc., their hairstyles, the back story and other good stuff about the show we love (as if you couldn’t tell)!

Country music hairstyles: Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Nettles & more

The 45th Academy of Country Music Awards–For most fans, it’s about the music, fashion and gossip. For us, it’s all about the hair…and we weren’t disappointed! Most of the same old, same old country coifs, there were lots of new twists. In the end we took away looks that are more do-able in the real world.
Down & pretty
We’ll start with American Idol Carrie Underwood, this year’s top entertainer and winner of the Triple Crown (for past wins as top entertainer, top female vocalist and top new female vocalist). Carrie changed her hair throughout the show to match her revolving wardrobe. There were too many to show, so we picked one that’s down…smooth on top, curly below. Then there’s three blondes who look a lot alike. Laura Bell Bundy wears her hair down like Carrie’s without the curl. Whitney Duncan’s do is similar to Lara’s but looks different because it’s one length and more stylized. Julianne Hough goes half & half with the top swept back and the rest curly. You might guess that Carrie’s and Julianne’s styles are more time-consuming and complicated than the other two.
Up & glam
Taylor Swift went home award-less but she wowed the crowd with her singing while flying in the air and ripping off a white outfit to reveal black underneath. Taylor balanced the surprise with classic glamour waves. Meanwhile Hillary Scott glowed in an upsweep fit for a queen and member of Lady Antebellum, who won best single record, song and vocal group.
Up, glam & unique
Miranda Lambert flaunted a new updo (lots of hair left loose for a “short” look), and took home this year’s top video, top female vocalist and top album. Another free thinker is Jennifer Nettles, choosing waves like Taylor’s yet less structured, less formal.
In the end, all was well for style watchers (like us!).
