Country music hairstyles: Miranda Lambert, Hillary Scott, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Meghan Linsey and Gwyneth Paltrow(?)

Hillary Scott, Miranda Lambert together with her fiance Blake Shelton were forces to be reckoned with at the Country Music Awards. Hillary’s Lady Antebellum is the Vocal Group of the year. Miranda and Blake are the vocal couple (not an official category) of the year with wins in the top Female and Male Vocalist.  Like many big stars, Miranda took advantage of the night to wear more than one look throughout the night. Her fanciest ‘do was pouffed up and swept to one side. After her Revolution-ary singing, the blonde’s bangs were pushed back and the length freed from her left side. Meanwhile, the lady of Lady Antebellum stuck with her polished curls but the top of hair went up and back on top. To copy it, do a roller set, tease hair around the face, gently comb into place and spray.

Watching Gwyneth Paltrow perform was like a preview for Country Strong her soon-to-be-out movie. In the movie she looks the part of a Nashville girl with her long layered waves. For the CMAs, though, she went back to her famous movie star mane. Her hairstyle choice simplified preparation for the premier that was giving her butterflies. To get the super sleek look, blow dry hair over a jumbo brush and follow with a flat iron. In the film Gwyneth’s hair looks more like Carrie’s, smooth curls that require blowdrying plus a time-consuming styling with a curling iron. While the critics dissed Taylor Swift’s dowdy ‘do, we thought she looked as pretty as ever with her full hair twisted and rolled into a French-style coiffure.

Laura Bell Bundy, Gretchen Wilson and Jennifer Nettles  represent the three major hair groups: short, medium and long. Laura and Gretchen wore pretty similar looks, but the blonde was able to get more volume because her hair’s shorter and more layered. The blonde’s coif requires more time than the others requiring a blowdrier, rollers and possibly a curling iron. To get Gretchen’s coif, dry hair smooth and follow with a curling iron. Hold the iron vertically and alternate the curling direction, taking one strand forward the next back. Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles has the sweet simplicity that comes with a short cut. Hair that has a good cut and a little body takes little more than mousse or sculpting foam and fingershaping while drying.

Julianne Hough surprised fans when she walked the red carpet in a new red haircolor. While her mane has more highlights, it would be just as pretty with more brown to create an awesome auburn that shines during cold-winter months. Steel Magnolia’s Meghan Linsey sticks with the sassy shortcut she’s made her own. Styling is easy but takes a little more effort than Jennifer’s. Most hair types would need help from a blowdrier and round brush to smooth, lift and roll.

Katherine Heigl is yet another celeb criticized for her looks at the CMAs. Wouldn’t we all want to look this “bad”?  We think it’s cute and know the style works well on many hair lengths. Short ‘dos just need to be curled and lifted off the face. Longer locks can be worn up and smoothed down in back to complement the high crown. Katherine was at the awards with her hubby-country crooner Josh Kelley. Another significant other on the country music scene is Kimberly Williams-Paisley, actress-wife of the Entertainer of the Year Brad Paisley. Retro waves brought a touch of Old Hollywood to the awards show and complemented Kimberly’s glam gown.

All this goes to show that there’s more variety in country music hairstyles than there used to be. Here’s hoping it will continue to evolve!

Miranda Lambert’s hairstyle & her nine CMA award nominations

Earlier this year, Miranda Lambert won three awards from the Academy of Country Music and one from CMT. Those honors paved the way for her latest coup: nine CMA  award nominations — the most ever for a female in this contest! Her album Revolution plus songs White Liar and The House that Built Me put Miranda in the running for this year’s top Entertainer, Album, Song, Female Vocalist and Musical Event. What’s more, she’s been nominated twice for Single and Music Video of the Year.

While her career is soaring, Miranda’s hairstyles have stayed down to earth. The flashiest touch is chunky red highlighting through pale blond — the perfect match for her fiery Texas voice. The styles shown here prove how versatile long hair is, but they also offer fresh ideas for medium-length cuts. Her easiest ‘dos are straight, with hair worn off or on the face. Blow-drying small sections of hair at a time polish it up.

For a change of pace, the rising star chooses side bangs, volume and a little loose wave. She wore this style for a special date with fiancé Blake Shelton to the CMT Awards show. (BTW: the couple will face off in three CMA categories: musical event, single and music video of the year). To do the coif, apply a strong-hold styling product to damp hair. Use your fingers to blow-dry and finish with a large round brush.

To get the most elaborate of these coifs, hair should be volumized before being swept back. Create big curls around the face to soften what could be a severe style.

No matter what happens with the awards, it’ll be fun to see if Miranda’s hair changes between now and the CMA show in November.

Country music hairstyles: Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Nettles & more

The 45th Academy of Country Music Awards–For most fans, it’s about the music, fashion and gossip. For us, it’s all about the hair…and we weren’t disappointed! Most of the same old, same old country coifs, there were lots of new twists. In the end we took away looks that are more do-able in the real world.
Down & pretty
We’ll start with American Idol Carrie Underwood, this year’s top entertainer and winner of the Triple Crown (for past wins as top entertainer, top female vocalist and top new female vocalist). Carrie changed her hair throughout the show to match her revolving wardrobe. There were too many to show, so we picked one that’s down…smooth on top, curly below. Then there’s three blondes who look a lot alike. Laura Bell Bundy wears her hair down like Carrie’s without the curl. Whitney Duncan’s do is similar to Lara’s but looks different because it’s one length and more stylized. Julianne Hough goes half & half with the top swept back and the rest curly. You might guess that Carrie’s and Julianne’s styles are more time-consuming and complicated than the other two.
Up & glam
Taylor Swift went home award-less but she wowed the crowd with her singing while flying in the air and ripping off a white outfit to reveal black underneath. Taylor balanced the surprise with classic glamour waves. Meanwhile Hillary Scott glowed in an upsweep fit for a queen and member of Lady Antebellum, who won best single record, song and vocal group.
Up, glam & unique
Miranda Lambert flaunted a new updo (lots of hair left loose for a “short” look), and took home this year’s top video, top female vocalist and top album. Another free thinker is Jennifer Nettles, choosing waves like Taylor’s yet less structured, less formal.
In the end, all was well for style watchers (like us!).
