‘For Colored Girls’: poor movie, rich style

For Colored Girls” isn’t getting good reviews, but you have to give Tyler Perry credit for taking on a movie adaptation of the acclaimed play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. Many in show biz never thought the drama would be made into a film. If nothing else, Perry has renewed interest in Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem that inspired women from all walks of life in the ’70s.

The flaws in Perry’s movie do not diminish the beautiful performances of all-star actresses: Loretta Devine, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Anika Noni Rose, Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad and Macy Gray. And you don’t have to like the movie to love the fashions. The hairstyles are pretty yet natural, reflecting the diversity of real women–trendy, traditional, polished, sexy, exotic and more–like the colors of a rainbow.
