Early in the day J Lo had short hair. During the show, it was long again. Did she get her hair cut or was she taking a mini break from extensions? Only her hairdresser knows for sure!
On June 20th, Jen was in Santiago, Chile as part of her World Tour 2012. When she and beau Casper Smart were taking in the sights, J Lo was nearly unrecognizable in short hair and shades. It seemed like her long locks had been cut up to the shoulders…but later that night she was right back to her long trademark tresses for her Dance Again show.
The quick change had everyone wondering whether Ms. Lopez had her hair cut, was wearing a wig or took out extensions and had them re-applied. As of yet, no one has the answer, and it will probably remain a mystery because Ms. Lopez wants it that way!
We were glad to see former American Idol judge changing up her look, and it would have been nice if she stuck with it a longer than a day or two. We liked the cut, but not the style–unbalanced with curls puffing out too far on one side. The mane drawback is that it’s outdated. As dailymail.com puts it, “the new ‘do [has] the air of a natty ’80s power coiffure.”
Wearing glam hair and fashion, Jordin looks every bit of the movie star she is becoming with the release of Sparkle in August.*
At Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, Jordin stood out from the crowd, bringing a breath of fresh air to an industry that can be jaded, not-so-pretty and just plain tired.
Here you can see why the American Idol has become a style icon. Her look is an inventive mix of Retro and Avant-Garde. Close up, Jordin’s gown has a futuristic vibe with its slit-neck, notched bodice. But a full-figure view reveals the feminine skirt flowing from the leather top.
A fringe benefit of the strapless couture is the bare décolletage that draws all eyes up to Jordin’s striking facial features, which are also highlighted with hair swept back. Impeccable makeup and elegant earrings polish off the look.
Jordin’s hairstyle is fairly easy for anyone who has thick, curly locks. Simply apply your fave styling product to damp hair. Scrunch while drying naturally or while using a diffused blow-dryer. Comb hair back but loosen it before securing for a softer finish.
*Jordin and Whitney Houston worked together in the movie Sparkle and contributed to the soundtrack. Their Celebrate duet from the film was the last song Whitney recorded before her untimely death.
Anyone who likes to try new hairstyles knows that old movies are a great place to look for ideas. Of course, some of those retro looks are too outdated or nearly impossible to recreate.
On the other hand, some styles are easier to do today because of the variety of tools and product. Here, Jennifer Lopez has her hair blown dry smooth and then curled using a barrel curling iron with a diameter of one to one-and-a-half inch. Then spritz on a styling spray and set hair in pin curls. Keep the bobby pins in for as long as possible (ideally an hour). Use your fingers to gently smooth hair out and into place. Spray with your favorite holding/shine product. For J.Lo, the finishing touch was Oribe Superfine Hairspray.

At first glance, the hairstyles at the CMT awards last night were disappointing…but there were some highlights!
Among the best tressed are Sugarland‘s Jennifer Nettles (above) and Steel Magnolia‘s Meghan Linsey (below left). Judging from our stats, you like their looks a lot. Both dos are on the shorter side, distinguishing them from other country music stars. Other unique touches are Jen’s layers and Meghan’s side ponytail.
Sheryl Crow and Sara Evans (above right) deserve honorable mentions. They don’t change their hair often, and they don’t have to because their trademark looks work perfectly. Of the two, Ms. Crow goes longer with bronde highlights and loose curls. Sara’s straight locks are slightly angled around the face and styled to be super sleek and shiny.
Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott (above) did something different with her hair, and the results were so-so. The crown wasn’t full as it usually is and the curls were looser than normal. Lady A. frequently dons a half-upsweep so that touch doesn’t come as a surprise.
Ending with the worst, we give Laura Alaina a big thumbs-down (she doesn’t look like an American Idol runner-up!). Her high-contrast haircolor could be labeled as a very bad ombré, but it’s really like a past trend that was never very good–a very different color like black under a light shade such as platinum blond.
You may be wondering why we’re so fascinated with buzzed haircuts. We really don’t know the answer, but it could be because the celebs who wear them are some of the gutsiest women we know. Of course they have the freedom to cut off their manes because they look great in any hairstyle.
We’re wondering if this is the making of a mini trend with Janet joining other bare heads like Solange Knowles, Agyness Deyn and the beautiful creature of Splice. Today we were going to feature them all together but there’s too much good stuff to pack into one post. So… here’s an update on the one and only Janet from the infamous Jackson family. The Nasty singer was first spotted in a crew cut on May 20th, so naturally the next day her new do dominated the headlines of style and gossip news. There were only a few candid photos (not very flattering, above right) showing Ms. Jackson in her barely-there hair that had a super-high shine. A few days later (above center) it looked like Janet had grown out her hair overnight when she appeared at a London preview screening of Why Did I Get Married Too? With a long full crown topping the buzz, there’s no question that the look was artificially enhanced. The star’s sheer magic just goes to show you that even a buzz cut can look longer than it really is. It helps to have access to a celebrity hair designer, but real women could do the trick with good hairpieces and a talented hairstylist to show them how.
Another day after her hair was buzzed (June 3rd in Harlem, left), the star was spotted in a fabulous fake on the set of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. For her third movie with Tyler Perry, the super-short style is slightly longer on top and has long bangs. This style and the wavy upsweep without bangs just goes to show you that it’s possible to get variety with short hair. The new movie coif has to stay consistent but that works out great for Janet who is showing up with similar shortcuts on TV appearances. While she’s getting a break from extensions, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her go long or in-between sometime soon.
Getting back to the buzz, Janet really showed it off at the finale of American Idol. Many reviewers say she stole the show with her shorn hairstyle, trim figure and Michael-style dance moves… not to mention her much-loved voice. Again, Janet enhanced the simple short with a glossy finish.
Finally, we wanted to compare a couple of Janet’s old hairstyles with the new. While she looks cute in long ringlets and bangs, the excess hair overwhelms her delicate face. Another time she was wearing dread locks for a visit with her brother Michael. This time the hair was off the face, which is good, but the length, texture and wide headband were too much for Ms. Jackson. We could show you plenty of pretty pix of Janet in long hair, but we like to see the soft-spoken star make a strong statement with her hair. Many of you must agree: a poll on Janet-online.com shows 88.88% of fans are in favor of the crop. Don’t worry if the buzz cut annoys you… it won’t be around for long!
We don’t care what the critics say… when it comes to hair, Crystal Bowersox has our vote! After all, when do you see a rising star stick to her roots and wear her old hairstyle? Crystal rarely tresses up, but that might change after the American Idol finale tonight. The bluesy folk rock singer will be a success even if she comes out #2 in the biggest talent show in the country (if not the world!). Posing as a glamour girl, Crystal proves the naysayers’ wrong. The popular opinion among critics is: Crystal’s unkempt looks aren’t appropriate for Idol status. While messy dreadlocks are her thing, the daring do can easily be polished up… and it’s more versatile than you might think! Simply undo the twists and rearrange them (all up, half up, braided bun, whatever).
Now, this is more like it… Crystal lets her hair down when she’s offstage, signing autographs and mingling with fans. Anyone who’s never had a taste of dreadlocks (Caribbean beach style) doesn’t know what she’s missing! You can do it a little or a lot. Choose to go all out reggae, half dreadlocks or a just a few in front. Unless you’re in the islands, you probably want to play it safe. Another option: start with lots of dreadlocks and take them out a section at a time for cool crinkly curls. The best part? The twisted tresses look good for weeks or longer if you want. Simply shampoo and go… or create a one-of-a-kind coif before hitting the road!
Next to co-finalist Lee DeWyze Crystal’s mane really breaks the norm until she changes it up and goes from Janis Joplin to Royal Rocker. For modern pomp, Crystal teases her long bangs and gently lifts them up and back. The rest of crown is smoothed back and topped off with a twisted ponytail. There’s a big diff between the dressy updo and the others. When Crystal strikes a “poster” pose, her hair is pretty similar to the style in the photo with Lee: the second look is tousled and pumped up on top! Yet another option is a big French-style braid wrapped around the crown and topped with calmer dreads.
A big reason fans can relate to Crystal is her adorable son, Tony, and they have nicknamed her Momma Sox. During quality time with Tony, hairstyles (and career) are the least of the star’s concerns, so a high pony is a natural
In a few hours the next American Idol coronation takes place… either way, Crystal wins the style competition!
The 45th Academy of Country Music Awards–For most fans, it’s about the music, fashion and gossip. For us, it’s all about the hair…and we weren’t disappointed! Most of the same old, same old country coifs, there were lots of new twists. In the end we took away looks that are more do-able in the real world.
Down & pretty
We’ll start with American Idol Carrie Underwood, this year’s top entertainer and winner of the Triple Crown (for past wins as top entertainer, top female vocalist and top new female vocalist). Carrie changed her hair throughout the show to match her revolving wardrobe. There were too many to show, so we picked one that’s down…smooth on top, curly below. Then there’s three blondes who look a lot alike. Laura Bell Bundy wears her hair down like Carrie’s without the curl. Whitney Duncan’s do is similar to Lara’s but looks different because it’s one length and more stylized. Julianne Hough goes half & half with the top swept back and the rest curly. You might guess that Carrie’s and Julianne’s styles are more time-consuming and complicated than the other two.
Up & glam
Taylor Swift went home award-less but she wowed the crowd with her singing while flying in the air and ripping off a white outfit to reveal black underneath. Taylor balanced the surprise with classic glamour waves. Meanwhile Hillary Scott glowed in an upsweep fit for a queen and member of Lady Antebellum, who won best single record, song and vocal group.
Up, glam & unique
Miranda Lambert flaunted a new updo (lots of hair left loose for a “short” look), and took home this year’s top video, top female vocalist and top album. Another free thinker is Jennifer Nettles, choosing waves like Taylor’s yet less structured, less formal.
In the end, all was well for style watchers (like us!).
