Julianne Hough Blonde vs. Jessica Biel Brunette at MTV Movie Awards

go straight to celebrity HairStyles: bangs or no bangs. thick or fine. light or dark. it’s all good.

Whether famous or not, most women don’t like to be caught wearing the same thing in the same place. But that’s not an issue when it comes to hair. We doubt anyone at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards noticed that Julianne Hough and Jessica were both wearing long, straight hair. When they’re side by side, you can see the  resemblance.

THE CUT. THE COLOR.

Julianne’s mane is blunt cut with a distinct center part and single-process white blond. Meanwhile Jessica opts for ruler-straight bangs, angled fringe, subtle center part, and brown with a touch of ombré.

THE STYLING.

Getting the looks is similar, but the products vary to give Julianne more texture and Jessica more sleekness. Each ‘do starts with meticulous blow-drying, using a large round brush and working with small sections at a time. Finish with a flat iron or follow this tip from Jessica’s hairstylist Renato Campora: apply a dab of Frederic Fekkai’s Ironless Straightening Balm. (He uses another Fekkai product Brilliant Glossing Cream on the brunette’s damp hair before drying.)

Jennifer Aniston Hair: too pretty to be a real ‘Dirtbag’

This is the first time there has been an MTV Movie award for Best On-Screen Dirtbag. It just so happens that Jen has wanted to be one for a long time, and she got the chance in Horrible Bosses. So getting the Golden Popcorn is the icing on the cake!

Ardent fans of Jennifer on Friends must have been shocked last night when their lovable Jen was overly excited about winning Best On-Screen Dirtbag for her role in Horrible Bosses. “I mean, do you know how long I have tried to have somebody let me unleash my on-screen dirtbag? A really long time. And thank God this category just popped up.”

Hair color played a big part in changing her image from the girl-next-door to sex-crazed dentist obsessed with getting her prized employee into her bed (dental chair, floor, wherever). We remember how Jen fans hated her dark mane, but it worked perfectly to break out of her stereotype and portray a “dark” character.

Jen’s admirers needn’t have worried. She was back to her old self in no time with blond on brown (Bronde) color, long straight hair, angled around the face and a center part.

Country Music Ponytails: Julianne Hough’s hair vs. Taylor Swift’s hair

As always, ponytails are “cool” for Summer 2012!

Julianne Hough’s racing pony is tame enough to wear during the day yet frisky enough for evenings out. To copy the coif exactly, you have to have long bangs and hair that will hold the wave after blow-dry styling and curling with large Velcro®/hot rollers or a curling iron. For added lift at back of crown, backcomb or insert a little hair “bump” underneath; then gently smooth out hair on top. Keep the front loose when making the tail.

Taylor Swift’s ponytails can go many different ways, and so can Julianne’s, come to think of it! Here are only two examples of long hair’s versatility. Taylor’s spiral curls are swept to one side and spill out from braided look above the tail. Another day, Taylor chooses straight hair smoothed back and secured with a strand of hair over a coated elastic holder. Bangs and long sideburns create a flattering frame for the face and soften the updo.

Jennifer Aniston Hair: pretty smart like her fave drink–smartwater

Our BFF keeps her hair as simple as her fave drink—smartwater!

smartwater says, “Simplicity is delicious.”
We say, “Simplicity is sexy.”

This is the second year Jennifer Aniston has been the star of ads for Glacéau smartwater. Launched in June magazines, the campaign features beautiful black-and-white photos, befitting a classic trendsetter of our times. Her beginnings as a style icon began with The Rachel haircut on Friends and continues to this day with movies such as Just Go With It, Horrible Bosses and recently Wanderlust. While her Rachel look is the most memorable, Jen has been a leader in other trends like the Bronde movement that’s still going strong today. This newer trend refers to blond on brown hair color. Her haircut, too, is well-known for being straight, angled around the face and lightly layered for built-in volume.

smartwater says, “good taste travels well.”
We say, “good style travels beautifully.”

Having followed Jen from the beginning, we know that she has always cared about keeping her hair healthy. Using good sense and help from her longtime hairstylist and friend Chris McMillan, Jen counteracts the dryness/damage that comes with chemical treatments and frequent blow-drying/heat styling. The stylist to the stars who created The Rachel is the owner of Chris McMillan The Salon in Beverly Hills and co-owner of McMillan Canale Salon in Malibu.

smartwater says, “live a life well hydrated.”
We say, “live a life with hair well hydrated!”

In a past interview with Allure magazine, Chris revealed some of their healthy hair care tips: “We pretty much have a formula. I use a Kérastase mousse at the crown and the ends and a little bit of Kérastase Sérum Oléo-Relax only on the ends–because we love the smell and how it moisturizes her hair.” Kératase Ciment Thermique also helps keep her hair in good shape and ultra-shiny.

Hairstyle aficionados may remember in 2011 when Ms. Aniston had her long hair cut off into a mid-length bob during the promo tour for the movie Just Go With It. In the January 2012 issue of InStyle mag JenA confided, “The real reason I cut my hair? My real hair was getting thinned out again from all the extensions. It was starting to look fake.” Earlier, around the time of the haircut, McMillan told allure.com, “It’s nice to take the extensions out of the hair and do something more natural.”

Jen gets the same kind of attention from her colorist Michael Canale, co-owner of the McMillan Canale salon. He usually keeps the highlights within a couple of shades of the star’s natural hair, so that she continues to look like a real-life California Blonde.

Battle of the Blondes: Rita Ora’s hair vs. Rihanna’s hair

Different shades of blond, same kind of pose
Stars copying their predecesors is nothing new, but entertainment writers make it seem that way when referring to Rita Ora and Rihanna. The first “R” has even been called The British Rihanna. While they don’t look exactly alike, they have similar tastes such as low-cut gowns, little tats on their left sides and long blond curls. As for the differences, their light haircolors are not the same here: Rita poses in a Marilyn-like platinum and RiRi wears a hard-to-define blond all her own. The texture varies, too. Rita’s hair is smooth and polished and Rihanna’s full and loose!

Their blond hair color and Beanies are nearly the same!
Earlier this year, the singers were photographed in trendy Beanies and bleached blond. Since then Rita has topped the Vodafone Big Top 40 for a second week with her debut single R.I.P. Hence, the continued comparisons between Rita and the global superstar.

While their cat eyes are not identical, is their hair color?
It’s hard to tell, because  these images are captured in different settings. Rihanna’s hair has a hint of butter color, but that may be due to the natural lighting.

In the end, these questions aren’t important. It’s not a crime to emulate famous names from the past. Just think of all the women who have tried to look like Marilyn Monroe: Madonna, Christina Aguielera, Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, Michelle Williams and many more actresses.

What’s more interesting is whether Rita will continue to be labeled the new Rihanna and whether she will end up with a fraction of RiRi’s fame!

Emma Stone Strawberry Blonde: Cool Celebrity Hair Color for Summer 2012!

For red-hot color brighten dark hair or add depth to light blond!

No matter how she colors it, Emma Stone’s hair is always pretty, flattering and simply stunning–in strawberry blond, copper, red, auburn, platinum, etc. For years now, Emma Stone has been a leading–if not the leading–trendsetter in hair color–for celebs and real women alike. She changes the hue so often we’re not sure what it is today. The strawberry blond in question (above) refers to Emma’s hot look at the annual Met Ball on May 7th.

We could search photos all day and might not find the color du jour, but we’d rather spend our time learning how Em keeps her hair healthy and natural-looking through the wash-and-wear of color changes and constant styling.

As usual with the rich and famous, Miss Stone has an advantage with help from Tracey Cunningham, Redken’s Colorist of the Year Award for 2011. Tracey has worked with stars such as Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez and Emily Blunt and Sofia Vergara. She’s popular because of her ability to maintain healthy hair through the coloring process. Some of her secrets are as simple as using a temporary product like Redken Shades EQ Cream to get rich color and radiant shine. Some celeb-style colors–namely single process–can be achieved at home. But highlights, lowlights, platinum, etc. are best left to salon colorists.

Return to realhairstyles.net soon to find out how to do Emma’s Met Ball style (complete with a custom-made, designer hair ornament).

Jordin Sparks set to ‘Sparkle’ in movie by the same name!

Wearing glam hair and fashion, Jordin looks every bit of the movie star she is becoming with the release of Sparkle in August.*

At Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, Jordin stood out from the crowd, bringing a breath of fresh air to an industry that can be jaded, not-so-pretty and just plain tired.

Here you can see why the American Idol has become a style icon. Her look is an inventive mix of Retro and Avant-Garde. Close up, Jordin’s gown has a futuristic vibe with its slit-neck, notched bodice. But a full-figure view reveals the feminine skirt flowing from the leather top.

A fringe benefit of the strapless couture is the bare décolletage that draws all eyes up to Jordin’s striking facial features, which are also highlighted with hair swept back. Impeccable makeup and elegant earrings polish off the look.

Jordin’s hairstyle is fairly easy for anyone who has thick, curly locks. Simply apply your fave styling product to damp hair. Scrunch while drying naturally or while using a diffused blow-dryer. Comb hair back but loosen it before securing for a softer finish.

*Jordin and Whitney Houston  worked together in the movie Sparkle and contributed to the soundtrack. Their Celebrate duet from the film was the last song Whitney recorded before her untimely death.

Pink’s hair vs. Katy Perry’s hair & rumored lip-synching at The Billboard Music Awards

We love bold, bright hair colors like Katy’s and Pink’s.
But the idea for this post comes from a controversy that’s taken on a life of its own after Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards show.

The alleged feud involved Pink, her husband Carey Hart, Chris Brown and Katy. It all started during the show and made headlines in the days after. Pink felt like she had to apologize to Katy for a tweet her husband sent that could have been taken the wrong way. From Sunday to Monday, Pink and Chris clarified that they were criticizing Chris Brown, not Katy, for lip-syncing. The gist of Carey’s first message was that Pink did a better job than Ms. Perry on a similar swinging-in-the-air act at the 2010 Grammy Awards, and Pink “was 3 months pregnant!”

Getting back to the mane reason for this post…
Judging from our stats, it seems you aren’t really into wild hair coloring a la Pink and Katy Perry (judging from our stats). But WE like some of them, and will continue to cover them…

Katy’s true blue & purple streaks?
Ms. Perry has favored this type of color scheme recently, and often the results are subtle like this. We haven’t heard about any fashion “expert” who compliments  the shades. Maybe we haven’t looked in the right places? Doesn’t matter, this combination is pretty even when it’s more noticeable hints of pastels.

Pink’s solid platinum vs. Pink’s pink streaks on white
Pink wore white-hot platinum in a cropped haircut with grand pomp and circumstance. Few real women could pull it off, but Pink can because she’s beautiful and confident enough to bare her face–that’s exactly what this ‘do does with its long lifted crown and buzzed sides.

The photo of Pink-on-white isn’t from Sunday’s Billboard gala, yet it’s more representative of her one-of-a-kind multicolors! We’re not sure if we’d ever dare to wear something so “out there”…unless it’s temporary, for a day or two. We’re more likely to try something subtle like January Jones’ pink streaks from Spring. In the end, we never say “never” when it comes to hair!
